Description

First I'd like to give a shout out to djhiryu508.deviantart.com/ for giving me such great advice on how to use Braviary.

In honor of Fourth of July, I thought I'd raise a patriotic Pokemon. Thankfully, there was one out there, the one and only Braviary!

Braviary is one of the better Pokemon with the Normal/Flying typing, as he isn't bothered by Spikes of either kind (which are extremely common). He also has a good Attack stat, pretty decent defensive stats (since most Pokemon with this typing are incredibly frail), good abilities, and a very solid movepool. He can learn moves such as Crush Claw, Rock Slide, Zen Headbutt, and even Superpower (which is one of his main selling points). The main problem with Braviary is Speed, as his lackluster base 80 speed just isn't up to par with a lot of Pokemon. He also doesn't have the greatest defensive typing as he's weak to Stealth Rock, and is also outclassed by several Normal/Flying types (mainly Staraptor). Braviary also has the blessing of being able to hit Steel types, which most Normal / Flyings cannot even scratch, with Superpower. But Superpower unfortunately has the drawbacks of the stat drops, so use it sparingly. Braviary works well on most teams, and is definitely a threat to be prepared to face quite often.

Here’s my Braviary's summary.
Nature: Adamant
Held Item: Fightinium-Z
Ability: Defiant
EVs: 252 Atk / 6 Def / 252 Spe
-Return
-Brave bird
-Superpower
-Tailwind

Return is a good STAB move that has excellent neutral coverage overall. Brave Bird is a powerful STAB move that, unlike Return, no Pokemon is immune to. Superpower allows Braviary to hit Steel-types, which would otherwise wall him due to his two STAB moves being unable to break through them. Lastly, Tailwind is excellent Speed control and helps boost up the speed of Braviary and its allies.

Maximum Speed investment lets Braviary outpace Pokemon with less than a base 80 speed stat. Maximum Attack investment with an Adamant nature gives Braviary as much power as possible to break through teams. Fightinium-Z and Superpower can be run to give Braviary a powerful base 190 All-Out Pummeling Z-Move! This is a great move to run as he effectively helps Braviary cover its weaknesses to Ice and Rock-types. It also helps him hit Steel-types harder since they wall both of its STAB attacks. Lastly, Defiant allows Braviary to gain a +2 Attack boost if any of its stats are lowered by the foe, making it a great tool when combined with entry hazard setters. This is especially helpful in the current VGC metagame (that Braviary is allowed in) where many Pokemon like Arcanine and Gyarados are common and run Intimidate, this enables you to take advantage with Braviary's Defiant ability.

Another amazing ability Braviary got was Sheer Force, and he can make good use of it given his extended movepool.

Here’s another Braviary's summary.
Nature: Adamant
Held Item: Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force (Defiant can also work on this set and most others)
EVs: 252 Atk / 6 Def / 252 Spe
-Brave Bird
-Crush Claw
-Rock Slide
-Superpower

Crush Claw gets both STAB as well as the boosts from both Sheer Force and Life Orb. Brave Bird is Braviary's most powerful STAB move and attains solid coverage on the metagame. Rock Slide gets the boost from Sheer Force and is perfect for Double Battles as it hits both of your opponent's Pokemon. Superpower is nice for nailing Rock- and Steel-types such as Rhyperior and Mega Steelix on the switch, wearing them down for later in the match. U-turn is an excellent momentum grabber and doubles as a useful tool for both bringing in frailer attackers and wearing down Braviary's checks.

Maximum investment in Attack and Speed along with an Adamant nature allows Braviary to hit as hard as possible while outpacing a good portion of the metagame. Jolly is still a viable option if you want Braviary to be a little more faster. If you're running Sheer Force on your Braviary, then have hold the Life Orb so it can get the extra power and not suffer from Life Orb's recoil.

Of course Braviary can run a variety of other moves. Here are some that my friend djhiryu508.deviantart.com/ suggested:
-Sky Drop is an option as it enables Braviary to both damage opponents and prevent them from even attacking. Though keep in mind of the move's drawbacks: it will not work on other Flying-type Pokemon and on any Pokemon weighing above 200 kg (440.9 lbs), such as Virizion and Terrakion. Here is a list to see which Pokemon weigh over 200 kg (440.9 lbs): bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wik…
-S
ky Attack could work VERY well on a Sheer Force Life Orb Braviary although you'll need to be very careful since the initial setup leaves you open to attack.
-Zen Headbutt could also work in place of Rock Slide for both Sheer Force and Defiant for more damage and slightly wider coverage for Poison-types and for when you can't risk the Brave Bird recoil on Fighting-types or need a more immediate solution than Sky Attack.
-If you don't mind the Life Orb recoil, you could opt for Return in place of Crush Claw. More damage, gets STAB, and is more accurate, but has no alternate effects and is easily gimped by Will-o-Wisps. But since you're gonna be rocking Sheer Force anyway that won't be that much of an issue.
-If you want your Braviary to have Defiant as his ability (which I recommend), then his moveset opens up far more as it can take advantage of moves that have a surefire chance of some kind of effect. Case in point, Rock Tomb. This helps with Braviary's speed and still be able to hit Ice, Fire and Flying-types really hard. I've recently paired this with Crush Claw and Sky Drop/Fly to really neuter the opponents stats before grinding them to dust. I'd go with Fly more often because of its higher base power.
-Steel Wing gives Braviary a way to cover against Rock-types. Though that's really what Superpower is for.
-If you're up to it, you can replace Superpower with Bulk Up if you're not afraid to deal with Rock or Steel-type (or you got another Pokemon on your team that can take care of them). Bulk Up works great with the Defiant ability as this basically makes it so you can boost both your best stats without fear of them coming back down because the opponent will be too afraid of the Defiant boost! Or since Defiant isn't a common ability on Braviary's to begin with, you could play mind games with your opponent, and make them think you have Sheer Force instead, then they'll feel it'll be safe to lower your Special Defense.
-Steelium-Z and Steel Wing give Braviary something to hit Rock and Ice-types for super effectively. Though Fightinium-Z and Superpower is frankly a much stronger option.

I have an update for a gen 7 Braviary: 252 attack and speed, 4 HP. Adamant nature, defiant ability. Fightinum-Z

-Return/Thrash
-Brave bird/fly
-Rock slide
-Bulk up

Exact same as the last set right? Well, that's where the Z-crystal comes in. With the Z-crystal, bulk up doubles your attack boost, essentially making it a swords dance with the added benefit of a defense buff. You know wat this means right?

Not only does Braviary theoretically get access to swords dance, he gets a slightly better version of it too thanks to the defense buff! Its all the things I said about my previous set except better. And now for the rest of the set:

With your now +2 attack boosted Braviary its time to REALLY wreck shop. Thanks to the confusion nerf this gen moves like thrash and outrage aren't as risky anymore which means Braviary is even better at being a tanky sweeper now. With the +2 attack boost, +1 defense boost and STAB return, thrash and brave bird, Braviary is going to be scary online.

But again, you'll want something that excels in speed control to really help Braviary setup and beat down the opponent.

The only real alternate option I have is replacing bulk up with superpower. The use is obvious: land an ultra-strong attack on the opponent to guarantee a knockout if superpower won't cut it. Plus seeing Braviary perform all-out pummelling is simultaneously hilarious, awesome and practical. Hilarious because he's throwing giant punches and kicks with talons and wings, awesome because the Z-move looks like something out of DBZ and the last strike looks cool on Braviary, and practical because its not only strong as hell (base 190 power) but also acts as a one-time stat loss prevention card so you don't have to worry about the attack and defense drop.
